If you happen to design and display your own jewelry at fairs, craft fairs, malls or wherever, it is probably more convenient to make sure it is displayed in a fashion that shows it off and protects it. You can actually in a short time create custom jewelry displays, ones that even have their own locks on them.
One of the easiest designs for your own display is one that you make with picture frames. Go out and buy two attractive frames that are of equal size and you are half way there. Just take out the cardboard backing and then clean up the pieces of glass in the frames. Once this is done you can then glue them with epoxy into the frames.
After the epoxy has dried take the frames and put them on top of each other. Then taking the side that is the long side of the bottom frame, use a ruler to measure three inches out from the edge. Mark this with a pencil. Continue to do this for all the edges.
Take some hinges and screws that came with the hinges and starting with the bottom frame use a drill or even a screwdriver will do to attach the first hinge to your display case and then do the same thing with the second hinge. Now take the other frame and put it on top of your bottom frame. It is important they are flush. Now you can screw your hinges into the top frame.
With your ruler you now need to find the exact middle of your case on the edge of the display that is opposite of where you attached the hinges. Take your pencil and mark that area. Here is where you will need to have a lock box with a latch and key because this is where you will attach it. Use the hardware that is provided with the lock and attach to the frames lining up the lock with the latch perfectly so that the display case closes properly.
Now the case is ready to have the insert put in. The insert is what you will hang the all the jewelry on. Take a piece of cardboard cut to size to fit inside. If you kept the cardboard that came with the frames, you can use it. Get some cotton batting and fit it on top of the cardboard and glue it securely down. It is best to use a hot glue gun for this step. Take fabric of your choice and wrap it over the cardboard and batting and glue into place and let dry.
It is important to note that you may want to drill the holes for your lock and hinges prior to attaching your glass to your frames. By doing this, you will help prevent any damage to the glass.
If you do not like the color of the frames you have consider painting them to your liking. If you do decide to do this just make sure that you paint them prior to the start of building the custom jewelry displays. This way you will avoid getting paint on the hardware or the glass.
