An Epipen Carrier Is A Wise Choice

By Anita Ortega

Anyone that suffers from life-threatening allergies must have immediate access to an epipen at the first sign of anaphylaxis. The single dose of the drug epinephrine this device provides could be life-saving. Investing in an epipen carrier to make sure you keep supplies on hand is a wise idea for allergy sufferers and their caregivers.

An epipen is an auto-injector that contains the drug epinephrine. It's considered the fastest way to administer a single dose of the drug in the event of a life-threatening allergic reaction that may be caused by certain foods, insect bites or other allergens. This reaction is commonly known as anaphylaxis and could include hives or other skin rashes, tightening of the throat or difficulty breathing.

Anyone who has a known allergy of this nature must carry epinephrine with them at all times. This includes adults, teenagers and even children. However, until a child is old enough to understand their allergy and the responsibility of carrying their own medication, it may be best for a parent or other caregiver to take charge of the supplies.

Although epipens are not overly large, they don't always fit well in the pockets of clothing. Traditional carrying methods include purses, backpacks and jacket pockets. However, there are many commercially available products specifically designed for this purpose.

The newer carriers make it easier for severe allergy sufferers to enjoy a more normal way of life. Many of these were designed with today's active lifestyle in mind. Parents of children with serious allergies can feel better knowing their child is prepared in case of an emergency.

The ankle and waist band pouches can be easily fastened to the body and hidden beneath clothing. This is perfect for active teenagers that just can't carry a bag everywhere they go or don't want people to notice. Zippered pouches that have loops for attaching them to a belt or backpack of your own are a good solution for adults that carry their child's medication. The pouch can be switched easily to another belt or bag as needed. Young children newly tasked with taking charge of their own supplies will like the new designs that look like smalls stuffed animals. They'll want to keep them by their side at all times.

Most carriers provide a great way to carry an epipen, but some also include special tags or medical identification cards. These allow important information, such as your name, address, phone number, emergency contact and what type of allergy you have, to be attached to the case. This could be very important in an emergency situation, but it could also be useful if the pouch was lost or accidentally left behind.

For those who suffer from life-threatening allergies, keeping an epipen within reach at all times is critical. If an anaphylaxis reaction occurs, having fast access to epinephrine could make all the difference. Fortunately for allergy sufferers and their caregivers, there are new types of carriers that make it easier to lead an active lifestyle and still carry an epipen.
