What To Know About Organic Klamath Blue Green Alge

By Sally Delacruz

Upper Klamath Lake, also called Klamath Lake, is a freshwater lake located in Oregon. The large, shallow body of water is located east of Cascade Range in the south-central portion of the state. Its surface area makes it the largest body of fresh water in Oregon. Organic Klamath blue green alge has become a popular topic among those interested in natural health.

The technical term Aphonizomenon flos-aquae is used to describe the algae that is produced in this lake. This is similar to chlorella and even spirulina, but there are differences. When people talk about this algae, they often remark on the positive ways it can improve one's health.

Grown in most other places, aphanizomenon flos-aquae is considered toxic. However, that which is grown in Klamath Lake is known for being pure and free of these toxins. This makes it available for ingestion by humans and there is plenty of it that grows in this region.

It is estimated that thousands of kilograms are harvested from the lake every year. Most of it is sourced out to clients that deal in supplements. In summer months, the growth is so robust that the lake itself turns green in color. The native fish of the lake usually die off because the algae sucks oxygen from the water.

There are many perceived benefits to this unique substance. While there are many claims about how this can benefit the body, not much research has been done to verify its potential. Some common health benefits associated with it: suppression of tumors, enhancement of the immune system, and acting as a plant source of the vitamin B12. Like most other blue-green algaes, that from Klamath Lake is said to be a nice source of phytonutrients, iron and protein.

This also has phycocyanin. A lot of it. In fact, the algae is believed to have the highest amount of this compound than any recorded food source that exists. Spirulina has high content of this compound, but even the Klamath Lake algae surpasses that by approximately three times. Phycocyanin is considered a natural antioxidant that is formed in cyanobacteria. This is thought to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.

Because there is no scientific evidence that proves the benefits of this algae, it should be taken with caution. Less than a handful of studies have been done on this substance and so there are many skeptics. Consider speaking with a health professional about your health status and interest in this algae before taking any supplements. This might not be effective for all people and so individuals who try it out should remain cautious and start slow.

A lot of health companies have this available in the form of a pill or powder supplement. It might include only the algae or other natural substances that work well with it. The cost for these goods will range considerably and may related to the retailer. Generally, they are not cheap. Always follow instructions given by the manufacturer and make sure the products are being purchased from a source that you trust.
