The Benefits Of Handmade Tomato Cages

By Kristen Baird

For all those tomato farmers they want to have plenty of returns and to have their fruit grow without any hitches such as rot and pests feeding on the fruits. They are easy fruits to grow but require much support to maximize the return. It is for this reason that many farmers choose the inexpensive option of making themselves their own handmade tomato cages.

The tomato cages are made in a vertical position. The reason for this is because when vertical they save on space since the tendrils will occupy more space that was otherwise not available. With it being in a vertical position it holds the fruit up in the air away from the ground.

Many benefits can be noted by just making them by yourself. One major is that you can make them according to the size that you wish. Those bought from the stores tend to be much smaller than what many would prefer. The smaller the cage size the less the space available for the tendrils and this directly affects the amount of fruit the plant will have.

Most farmers especially those who are in windy areas complain that their keep being blown away by the wind from time to time this affects yields they get. What most of them do not realize is that they should create a stronger base that will withstand any weather conditions. They should make the base wider than the top making it to look like a pyramid with a narrower top.

The material that one chooses to use to make his varies. One factor that will cause this to vary is ones budget and also how long one is wishing to use his. The cheapest material one would opt for is wood. Wood can be disadvantageous as it does rot with time. Wire mesh is the other cheap option but its downside is that it rusts hence gives a shorter duration of service to the farmer. Plastic pipes have been known to be the most durable as they do not rust nether do the rot.

The size of the fruit will vary with some being larger than normal and others being smaller. The larger ones on average take longer time to ripen but this time can be shortened by having them away from the ground. This also keeps fruit away from rodents and pests that spoil the fruit and also keep them clean.

One other benefit of the materials is that they are easier to work with. One might need two or more people to assist you in the making of the cage. The materials are also more durable and can be used for several seasons without having to replace them.

Do it yourself projects can be easy and a lot of fun especially if one follows the steps carefully without missing a step. One first has to measure out the size of the cage that one wants then can he or she purchase the materials. One can also look for help from an expert for just a small fee.
