A Brief History About Haunted Long Island

By Daphne Bowen

The island has a lot of history because it was the ancestral home for the Native Americans. Superstitions and tales about the area are being narrated all over the world. The old days were characterized by cultural activities passed from a generation to the other. Haunted Long Island is historical and archaeological, because evidence of ancient cultural practices, was discovered.

There is a famous ancient mountain with a winding road which passes through dense vegetation cover. This physical feature is known to have spirits of ancient people who died mysteriously in the past. A good example is the narrative about a hospital which burnt down with workers trapped inside, believed to have ghosts roaming everywhere within the island. The fire is said to have been started by a retarded nurse and people claim to have seen several ghosts. Another tale is about a mass suicide involving multiple teenagers who hung themselves next to a road and most tourists claim to have seen bones of these young adults.

Another legend entails a psychiatric center believed to have accommodated thousands of patients in a complex building block. The structure went down many years ago and sounds of people in different mental states can be heard. Archaeologists discovered underground tunnels with evidence of human torture and shock therapy is believed to have been the torture technique that was used during the ancient times in these premises.

There were special natural water bodies which played spiritual roles because the ancient people were culturally oriented. Within the lakes and rivers, people died either by assassination or suicide and their spirits haunts anyone who visits these areas. For instance, a newly wedded bride killed herself by drowning because an intruder had murdered her bridegroom that night. The outcome of this belief is that men drown yearly in this lake.

A residential complex built over a century ago by a wealthy businessman is dominated by ghosts of a young girl who initially suffered from typhoid. Apparently, the owner of this estate was the father of this infant and the girl has appeared several times in a black dress. The building was transformed into a catholic missionary and educational center fifty years ago.

There is another abandoned house which existed in a large farm that has spirits of dead people believed to have been slaughtered with an axe. The accused was found guilty of the charges, killed then buried in an undisclosed area as punishment. His spirits have once appeared to his family members for they forsake him by burying him indecently.

There is another middle aged female who was assassinated within her premises that currently operates as a catering services unit. Regular customers of this entertainment joint have heard her spirits screaming and the management of the hotel is facilitating the closure of this premises. Another young girl who worked at a bar and bank simultaneously was also murdered in cold blood and her spirits still wander around the island.

In a nutshell, most stories about haunted in this region have been criticized for being imaginary and superstitious in nature. It is difficult to tell if these tales are true because everyone is entitled to their opinions regardless of their validity.
