Care Process For Cattleya Orchids

By Rebecca Allen

Orchids are a variety of flowing plants that produce colorful blooms and they are usually widespread. Cattleya Orchids were discovered by an amateur horticulturist known as Mr. William Cattley. In his tribute they were named after him. These genus has many species. They had various uses and were used as corsages by women in important events. People love their colors and fragrance and this is a more reason to grow them.

Light is a factor that cannot be ignored when it comes to taking care of them. They are very sensitive to exposure. The right amount is necessary. It can be identified when these plants receive good amount or inadequate by examining the foliage color. The foliage will be rich green when describing the former where they do not flower while yellow- green describes the later. Shade should be provided for about seventy percent surrounding them.

The genus is referred to as epiphytes. Water is crucial for their initial stages. They advance from a horizontal stem like structure known as the rhizome. It develops adventitious roots while being immerged in water. A storage organ called the pseudobulb thrives upwards. It is responsible for flowering. Water supply should be stopped when this starts. Afterwards it is added only when the surface is dry and then maintained at regular intervals.

A pseodobulb appears and begins to rise upwards. It is a storage organ and it is from it that flowers will emerge when fully matured. When this happens, supply of water should be cut off. It should only be added when there is no more or when dry. The quantity should be checked regularly added otherwise the plant would die.

Potting should be done when they begin to throw out roots from the rhizome. The size should of the media should be large enough to allow a longer time to grow before reporting for at least two seasons. When performing the task of repotting, dead the roots are removed and the new ones exposed.

Nutrients are necessary. Little amounts are advised. When the nitrogenous nutrients are more, they must be removed by adding water. They also result to a vegetation like product and no florets and much worse, death of that plant. Monitoring throughout the evolving stage is necessary to administer the correct amounts.

The temperature, humidity and air movement should get taken into account. Although they trace their origin from the tropics which experience high temperatures, they are found on higher altitudes which are cooler. The aim of growing them is maintain optimum temperature which can be checked by feeling the leaves. Young tips are also damaged. This necessitates to keep humidity and air movement at optimum levels.

The species bloom differently. During a particular growing season, every pseudobulb occurring blossoms. These variety is the easiest to grow. As a result, there exists hybrids that are capable of flowering twice per year as compares to the species which produce only once. The grower should be able to handle them with all care so as to get reward for their effort and investment. It should also be noted that not all of them have smell.
