In doing so, therapists can often discover areas in need of the most work. After which, a client and therapist can work together to modify or eliminate these issues.

Individuals seeking psychoanalysis often see a professional 3 to 5 times a week. Whereas, those undergoing psychotherapy often have far fewer appointments. In addition, psychoanalysts prefer to use a couch while psychotherapists often prefer to meet clients in more relaxed environments. In fact, when working with children, many psychotherapists will visit a child at home, school and other locations in which the child feels most comfortable.

As for the type of individuals whom can benefit from psychoanalysis. These include, problems such as compulsive disorders in which the individual repeats specific actions on an ongoing or repetitive basis. Whereas, there are other individuals whom simply want to understand why choices have often been negative rather than positive. For example, those whom have consistently attempted to eliminate negative habits, though never being able to do so.

The most common reason individuals visit a psychoanalyst is because while being able to perform as if nothing is wrong at work or home, there are internalized issues with which the individual is having issues. In many cases, these can relate to feeling blocked or unhappy, intimacy, relationships, jobs or being puzzled by various ongoing behaviors which can be limiting or destructive. In other cases, a person can feel lethargic and withdrawn from friends and relatives without understanding why this the case.

In many cases, individuals will seek out the help of psychoanalysts to determine the meaning behind certain actions. As such, compulsive behaviors, co-dependence and enabling are often topics at the office when it comes to a number of clients. While these are just a few areas which psychoanalysts address on a regular basis, these are often the most common.
