Stopping The Spread And Staying Safe, Fire Suppression Systems

By Brian Robinson

Most people have an optimistic outlook on life. No one goes about the day worrying about being hit by a catastrophe. But, whether through unfortunate circumstance or through the deliberate actions of another, bad things, like a fire, still occur. Which is why fire suppression systems NYC are a sensible choice, jut to be prepared.

People can die and suffer grievous bodily harm in a fire. A building can go up in flames, taking a business and several livelihoods with it. In a dense, urban environment, having a mechanism in place to deal with one is a social responsibility. Large sections of cities have gone up in smoke because an inferno could not be controlled.

But beyond the social responsibility, there is the task of preserving culture and knowledge. In the past, libraries have burned down and the books and scrolls inside, made of highly flammable paper, burned as well. The knowledge contained in those books and scrolls was lost forever.

Prevention is the first line of defense. As such, stopping a calamity before it starts is always better than having to deal with it. Be careful when storing volatile or flammable chemicals. Take care that all electrical wiring is up to safety standards. Having a suppression system is prudent, but taking care to never need to use it is even better.

A fire suppression system is part of most commercial buildings. There are many different kinds, using different agents. But the main focus of them is that they put the flames out and isolate a blaze in a certain area and keep it from spreading.

The most fundamental system in place is to have multiple fire extinguishers on hand, as some cities require a commercial building to have by law, typically one for each level. The extinguisher releases foam to combat a blaze. This foam can be comprised of different chemical concoctions, each concoction suited to different types of flame based on fuel source.

Most building come equipped with sprinklers. Sprinklers become aware of a fire by detecting smoke or by sensing if the temperature gets too high. Once the inferno has been detected, sprinklers rain water down on it to put it out. When maintained and fitted in the correct manner, a sprinkler system is effective at dealing with most fires.

But there are areas in which water may not be a viable means of fire prevention, like a server room. In places such as those, chemicals are instead released to douse the whole area and react with the fire. Such a method can cause serious harm or injury however, as a common means of doing so is change barometric pressure or deplete the oxygen supply, neither of which is suitable for a human body.

The choice to have a suppression system or not is an easy one to make, most cities actually require one to be installed by law. But the choice of which to have can be somewhat more complex. Water works best for most places, but grease or electrical fires can require foam or inert gases to put out. Some places can be outfitted with different types of systems. Getting hit by a blaze is bad enough, getting hit by one with a system in place could be potentially catastrophic.
