Why It Is Good To Think Of How To Start A School Garden

By Carolyn Snyder

A school garden is one that is started and maintained within the school premises. To start one, a few laborers will be needed on the field. To let the students know how to start a school garden, they should also be made to work with the laborers who would guide them on what to do. The boys and girls will benefit a lot after the completion of the project.

Exotic plants and crops can be cultivated in the garden to give the students an opportunity to know how they reproduce. When a large space is utilized for the purpose, several crops can be harvested and sent to the kitchen for the students to enjoy in their next serving. If every teacher is unable to benefit from it, at least those who assisted in raising the farm will be appreciated.

If it is a boarding college, they will benefit from it a great deal. Even if food condiments are expensive in the market, the students will have something to eat. Assuming it is just fruits or a particular food crop that is planted, they will be better nourished because of the gardens.

As fewer foods are now purchased from the market, the school saves more money. Their savings can be utilized for other important aspects of school administration that can make them more successful. Even if they still have to make purchases, they are still better off with a garden.

The students will also benefit directly from this in that they will learn how to manage a farm. Their agricultural classes will make more sense because they now have somewhere to practice and see exactly what authors try to picture in their textbooks. Furthermore, they get to learn the times and seasons for different crops and how to apply pesticides to ensure maximum yield.

Children who are sent to schools that have some gardens develop an interest in agriculture early in life. This makes them self-dependent as entrepreneurs that may also be interested in packaging and selling their products. They also become employers of labor as they pay workers who help in actualizing their projects. Hunger and poverty, therefore, reduce because of the first love they developed in college.

Starting up gardens on the college compound will make students become more hard working. It will get them used to what their mates may term stress and they will be better off with it. It will also have a better effect on their health as they engage in activities that will help them burn fat, keep fit and become more muscular.

Nevertheless, the children love themselves the more as they work as a team to make their project successful. They get to know their strengths and weaknesses and also accept help when someone who is better at something steps forward to assist. The teacher's closeness to them makes him understand the students more and can assist them in other areas apart from academics. The closeness can translate to something vital for the students' families as he or she identifies specific problems in their homes.
