Chemical Peels for Treating Acne

By Marlene Ataine

Practically all teenagers suffer from acne at one time or another, but sometimes it's only a few 'zits' or pimples. For other teenagers however, acne can be more severe, and give rise to spots called whiteheads, blackheads, or larger red, inflamed spots called cysts in more severe cases. These skin pimples, spots and cysts can change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone and severe acne can in some cases leave scarring.

Although acne does not pose any danger, it can result in scarring of the skin. Human skin has pores (tiny holes) which connect to oil glands located under the skin. Follicles (small canals) connect the glands to the pores. An oily liquid called sebum is produced in these glands. Dead skin cells are brought to the surface of the skin by the sebum carrying them through the follicles. From each follicle a small hair grows through the skin. When these follicles get blocked, oil accumulates under the skin and pimples develop. Acne is common in teenagers as the hormonal changes during puberty can cause excess oils in the skin. Adults can also develop acne later on in life, which is called adult acne, so it's not just teenagers who suffer from acne.

For some adults, breakouts are a result of hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones). When both male and female hormones (estrogen) are imbalanced, it also results in a breakout. For women, this can happen during pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause. Sometimes acne is also encouraged by certain medications, such as corticosteroids, or even cosmetics.

A very good treatment for mild and moderate adult acne is a chemical peel. Chemical peels work by exfoliating the skin; dirt is cleansed from the skin, and dead skin cells which are clogging the pores are removed. This causes fewer acne pimples and spots to form. Chemical peels may also help to reduce some of the skin discolouration and uneven skin tone caused by acne.

For acne treatment, chemical peels are a very cost effective option. They are also a very safe treatment for acne. Superficial chemical skin peels are applied to the affected areas to exfoliate and cleanse the top layers of the skin, removing the dead skin cells. A course of six peels is usually recommended, each performed at least one week apart. This will result in a noticeable improvement in the skin texture and visibly reduce the amount of acne breakouts.

Make sure to approach a credible skin care clinic for your chemical peel acne treatment. Before embarking on treatment with chemical peels for acne, it is important to consult a reputable clinic to obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type.
