By Essie Osborn

Learning a needle-craft is an enjoyable way to fill in time and it can result in some beautiful hand-made projects one can proudly show off. A modern spin on a traditional stitching technique, silk ribbon embroidery gracefully combines delicate ribbon and colorful embroidery floss in an artful and creative way that adds a whimsical charm to any clothing item or household decorative piece.

It consists of several simple stitches which are not confusing like some other kinds of needlework, so even children should have no problem getting the hang of it. People who learn this technique can master it in a relatively short time, and most will follow their projects through to completion because of this.

Various ways of learning this craft are available to those who wish to learn it. It's all a matter of personal preference and learning styles. Many people find that they can benefit from the many visual aids and tutorials online, which teach this art through actually video footage of someone completing all the steps in the process. Other may prefer going to a sewing class in person or learning for a comprehensive guide book.

Choosing a pattern is the first step, it's best for beginners to select one which is less complex. Assembling all the supplies required for making the project will be the next thing one must do. The pattern should list the specific amount of each color thread that is needed, but it is not necessary to follow this exactly if one wishes to use different colors. Other supplies needed include tracing paper, marking pencils, embroidery hoop, pincushion, a pair of sharp, small scissors, silk ribbon, usually the 4 millimeter size, and embroidery floss.

Chenille needles are recommended for this type of work since they have larger eyes which are easier to thread and very sharp tips. It can simplify things to pre-thread several needles with the appropriate colors of floss or ribbon so they are available when needed rather than having to keep threading one needle each time. Beadwork is best done using a size 12, long applique or beading needle.

Although pretty much any type of material can be used for embroidery, it must not be so thick that the needle cannot pass through. A size 13 needle will make sewing on denser fabrics less challenging. Knits can be used but it's best to sew some interfacing onto their wrong side for more stability. One should always opt for pure silk ribbon over synthetic types since it looks much nicer and it's easier to work with.

Cleaning of completed projects must be done with caution in order to not spoil them. The silk ribbon should always be pre-washed prior to use, because the dyes it contains tend to bleed. If this is done, it should be safe to wash embroidered items in cold water with mild soap. Ironing, if needed, must be done on low heat and with minimal pressure.

People of all ages, both male and female have found this lovely handicraft a pleasure to learn and enjoy being able to express themselves in this creative way. Some will give their projects to others as cherished gifts or keep them for their own pleasure. One nice thing about this technique is that it's very easy to correct mistakes as well.
