Taking A Look At DIY Custom BBQ Pits

By Cynthia Reed

A backyard barbeque can be a great DIY project. It can be built below or above ground and as complex or simple as you wish. People who enjoy cooking outdoors love owning custom BBQ pits. The pit can also be used as a smoker and is relatively inexpensive, and takes little time and labor to make. The design can be as complex or simple as you want to make it. Begin the project by developing a plan that considers safety first and quality construction.

Choose the location that will work for your backyard. You want to have a good location that is level and not too distant from the house. You do not want to carry food and grilling utensils very far.

In addition, you want to be sure that smoke from the pit does not blow into your home or surrounding neighbor homes. Above all, you want to consider fire safety. Be aware of trees that may hang over the pit, distance from wood fences, and distance from buildings.

Settle on the type of pit you want to build. Select the one that you like and that fits your space. Check out the cost for the tools and materials that you need and set enough time aside to ensure you complete your project. You wont enjoy your barbeque pit if it sits unfinished. Ask for help from your friends and relatives who have some building experience. Their reward can be a BBQ dinner.

Take the time to draw your plan. You can make it simple or detailed to suit your tastes. You may want to look online for DIY projects. If you have little experience with building choose a simple plan. Laying the plan out where it will be built can give you an idea of size and shape. You might choose a rectangular pit that has sides waist high. You can also all a smoker or cooling rack.

Once your plan is drawn out you can collect your tools and the materials you need. A simple design will not require too many tools. You will need mortar, bricks, a shovel, a grill grate, level, and a cover for the pit. You may also want to collect some gravel, bricks, sand, and paving slabs.

Begin by digging a hole for your pit that is no bigger in diameter than the grill covers. You can make the pit as deep as a cinderblock or brick placed vertically. The best shapes for a pit are a square or rectangle. Bricks or cinderblocks are used to secure the sides when placed around the interior edge. Mortar is used to hold bricks in place preventing them from falling inside the pit.

Make sure that the grill sits flat over the top of the pit. Lay gravel and slabs on the grass around the edge of your pit as a defensible space. If you do not use gravel or slabs clear the grass that surrounds the pit. You are now ready to barbeque and enjoy the pit you built.
