What To Understand About Cattleya Orchids

By Sandra Jackson

These plants are known for their ability of flowering. They produce beautifully colored flowers on different periods of the year. Although, their flowering may be associated with different factors such as day length. The light and temperature are the major factors that determine the flowering ability of this kind of plants. The below article represents some of the general information that a person should know concerning Cattleya orchids.

The effects of temperature and light. These two are the environmental factors which affect these plants adversely. Their health and flowering abilities are affected negatively by them. The recommended temperatures for the day are between 65 to 85, with a minimum of 55. The night temperatures should be above 65. The light that is exposed to them should be adequate to keep their pale color yellow. Although, the light should not be too high to burn their leaves.

The process of watering. The watering periods should be separated by intervals that ensure dryness is observed. These intervals are supposed to vary with the variation in the humidity. The more the rain, the further the watering intervals, and the less the humidity, the closer these intervals should be. This ensures adequate dryness which prevents clogging leading to fungal and root infections. Containers that promote fast evaporation such as clay pots are encouraged for planting.

The process of putting fertilizers. The fertilizer available range from types but the best should be used to promote blooming growth. There is a specific process of applying these fertilizers, and each must be observed to ensure the right results are obtained. The compost is supposed to be put during watering periods. The flushing with clear water is done between the periods of application. The used fertilizer is supposed to be diluted.

Flowering periods. Many of these plants are known to flower twice per year. Different factors affect the flowering ability of these facilities. These include the light in which they are exposed to and the temperature ranges of both during the day and at night. The flowering ability is also known to occur according to variation in the day length. The old stems and leaves of the plants are responsible for providing energy for the next year flowering.

Reporting is important too. You need to report the plants on a regular basis to avoid the large roots from getting out of the pot. This is necessary to regenerate the plant and to prevent it from dying. A plant is supposed to be removed from the pot, and the root system is used to divide the plant. The plant is to be divided into not less than three times where the different parts are to be reported in separate containers.

The fungal diseases and infections. These plants are rarely affected by pests. Although, there is a probability of them suffering from fungal infections. This is depending on the care they receive. When they remain clogged for long periods, they become excessively hydrated hence fungal infections and root diseases attack them.

Pruning and reblooming. The process of pruning is to be observed to make sure the plant is brought back to the normal condition to promote growth. It is also essential that the pruning is occasionally done as it determines reblooming.
