Using A Window Bird Feeder To Bring Nature Inside

By Debra Garrison

Many people try to find ways to get closer to nature. Watching birds, squirrels, and other creatures can make you feel so close with nature. A walk through the park or a hike in the forest can show you a variety of beautiful creatures, but you don't have to go far to see nature's beauty. You can enjoy the beauty of nature right in your backyard, or from the comfort of your home. The easiest way to do this is by attaching a window bird feeder to your home.

People have been feeding birds for a long time. It can be so enjoyable to bring different kinds of fowl to your yard. Depending on the kind of feeder and seeds you use you can attract any number of aviary creatures.

Feeds with black sunflower seeds will attract the largest variety of creatures. Virtually all seed eating birds will eat black sunflower seeds. Using a tray feeder will also open you up to attracting a wide variety of fowl.

When your goal is to attract a specific kind of bird you will need to use a specific kind of feed and a specific kind of feeder. You can also use a variety of different feeders. This will allow you to attract many different kinds of birds.

Insect eating birds, such as woodpeckers, jays, or chickadees, are attracted by suet. Hummingbirds are attracted by feeders that are bright in color and filled with nectar. Hopper feeders attract cardinals, sparrows, and finches.

Using window feeders, however, can afford you an excellent view of many birds. These are held up by suctioning to the glass or hooking to the frame. Birds like the titmouse, finch, and chickadee are attracted to them.

This kind is also easier to clean since it is harder for bacteria to build up in the seed. This makes it safer for the fowl. They also prevent the issue of clear windows confusing birds and causing them to fly into them. This is a common problem when stand feeders are placed within three feet of windows.

Window feeders can be very interesting for children and pets to watch as well. It can be an educational experience to have your children watch them and research what kind of birds they are seeing. They can draw pictures of some birds they see sitting right outside their living room.

If you have an indoor cat, this is a great way to keep it entertained. It causes the cat to feel like it is exploring outside, but the birds stay safely on the other side of the glass. Dogs also like watching birds, and they especially like watching any squirrels that may wander onto a tray feeder.

There are so many options for feeding birds and bringing nature right into your yard, including the use of a window bird feeder. Whichever option you use, make sure you remember not to provide any feed in the winter months. Many people think this will help the birds, but, in fact, it disrupts their natural patterns.
