Ideas For Religious Tattoos

By Darren Hartley

To tattoo or not to tattoo? That is the question. There appears to be a controversy around religious tattoo ideas. While tattooing is considered in the category of disputable matters as far as the Bible is concerned, there is a warning written in Leviticus 19:28 that caution us not to make our skins with tattoos.

There were customs associated with pagan rites and rituals that were considered as acts against God in the years before Christ. Included among these customs are eating meat from animals whose blood has not been drained and cutting hair from the temples and beards. However, today non-kosher meat is a daily staple for some Christians and cutting the hair is part of everyday grooming. In the same token, perhaps controversial religious tattoo ideas are permissible in this day and age.

Because religious tattoo ideas are classified as matters in dispute, we turn to Roman 14:23 that states, 'everything that does not come from faith is sin.' In this verse, God has given us a means to judge our motives and weigh our decisions. So before getting a tattoo, it is best to examine your heart and motives for doing so.

Before taking one of the religious tattoo ideas to fruition, you must then examine your motives for getting the tattoo. Is it to glorify God or draw attention to yourself? Will the tattoo cause someone who is weak in faith to stumble or will it bring someone struggling in faith go back to the fold? Will the tattoo cause me to stray away from my family or will it bring the family closer together?

As a conclusion, the adoption of religious tattoo ideas must be an act that you take with the blessing of the Lord. You will know you have His blessing if you feel no guilt in your conscience that you are doing something wrong when you get your tattoo. A miniature of doubt in your head is a sign that you have to abandon the idea and put the possibility of getting a tattoo out of your mind completely.
