Tips On Coloring Gray Hair

By Ina Hunt

Looking good is a priority for all women. The way they look can really affect their self confidence and feelings about themselves. Even when something is not quite right they often begin to worry about it and this in turn can quickly start a downwards spiral about how they view their looks.

For centuries now it has been socially acceptable for women to change the color of their hair. This may be for purely cosmetic reasons, but it is most often done to cover up graying locks. Coloring gray hair can be done at home or at the salon. The results should help the woman feel good about herself and her appearance.

Women can begin to notice grays as early as their twenties. For most this is a hereditary problem over which they have no control. There really is nothing they can do to halt the process once it has begun. If they want to be free from gray hair they must use commercial color products, which can be applied in a salon or at home. Many people feel more comfortable getting their color done by a professional who really knows what they are doing.

Learning how to apply a home color does take a little practice. Each kit comes with its own set of instructions which should be followed carefully. The color must be mixed first and then applied to the roots. The rest of the mix can then be applied to the ends for the last five or ten minuets to achieve a uniform color.

Stylists are there to help and will give their clients lots of practical ideas and tips. Sometimes having long tresses cut short can take the emphasis off the color and help the woman make the transition to a whole new look. Those who are pregnant should also take professional advice about which are the safest brands to use.

Those who are not confident doing their own color can always go to salon. It will cost a little more but many women feel that it is well worth the cost. They can take the time to be pampered and enjoy the full salon experience. The stylist will also have lots of helpful tips and suggestions about how best to style and care for the tresses once they have been colored.

Coloring can have a drying effect on most peoples hair. This should be kept in mind and a good quality moisturising shampoo and conditioner used daily. Whenever possible it is a good idea to avoid blow drying to prevent further damage. Many women find that drinking lots of water and eating healthy can also help to keep their crowning glory looking its absolute best. This also keeps them feeling well and adds to their overall feelings of confidence.

If the gray hairs are very prominent it may be necessary to color as often as every three weeks. This will help to prevent the roots from becoming too obvious and keep the look consistent. It only takes about an hours from start to finish and the results are wonderful.
