Those who have participated before are however permitted to join with at least second or third place in the qualifiers.
The judges normally look at the resistances shown by the dogs during the activity and also the birds they capture successfully. There is also an endurance test and a test for the method they use when handling the hunts. For instance, the judges will look at if the competitors point before the main hunting.
An example of the most competent dogs in these championships is the Shadow Oak Bo. This is a male setter and it has managed to win twice in one hundred years of the event. Only two types of dogs have managed this, the only other one being the Red Water Rex. In the 2014 Ames plantation championships, this dog made history by winning after 43 years of waiting for a setter. Many say that it is the best dog to have ever participated in the championships.
