Pointers On How To Sew A Straight Edge

By Amy Rogers

Many people mistake sewing to be an easy thing to accomplish, but it is not. Those who have been doing it for years will say that the task of inserting a piece of thread to the needle eye is just the start of a harder venture. Patience as well as diligence will go a long way in the field of sewing.

The hardest thing would most probably be sewing straightly and neatly, even when you are making use of a machine. As with other things, one needs to be familiar with the things that one needs to utilize in order to better understand their functions. A few pointers will be given below on how to sew a straight edge.

First things first, be sure that you are not in an awkward or difficult position when you are dealing with your machine. One key thing to remember is sitting straight and by that, you also have to be in a straight line with your apparatus. This will help you in sewing straighter and better.

Almost all sewing apparatus comes with markings that indicate allowance on its foot plate. This was put there for a reason and following such markings will not only help you sew straight but with the right amount of allowance as well. However, there may be machines which do not have such like older ones and this is where the next tip comes into play.

In doing so, you can use a washi, masking, or painters tape. You can tape them on the foot plate of the machine and use them both as a marker for allowance as well to help you sew straight. This way it will be easier for you to sew and you also have to option to add as many allowance measurements as you like.

One thing that beginners need to stop doing when they are sewing is staring or paying their attention to the needle. When you do so, there is a bigger possibility of you losing your track of following the tape guide so stop it and make sure that you are staring at your guide as well as the sew that one is making. Staring at the needle can hypnotize you and cause wavy lines.

Some individuals will really find it hard to just follow tape or seam markers so another alternative is drawing on the fabric. Using a washable pen, you can draw a straight line in your fabric in order to be able to follow it better. However, always test such pens on scrap fabrics to make sure that they really are washable.

Lastly, many starters always tend to pedal too fast on their machines. Some even panic because the equipment is supposedly going to fast but they fail to realize they are the ones who are handling the apparatus. Keep in mind that the machine is dependent on you, not otherwise.

The things that look like they are the easiest to do can sometimes be the ones which are actually hard to accomplish. However, with the things above, one may be able to do the task without much difficulty. Do not give up and remember that practice makes perfect.
