Useful And Essential Facts About Mississippi Orthodontics

By David Phillips

Dentistry is referred to as a medical field which is associated with the proper maintenance of dental health of people. Dentistry as a field consists of many subfields under it. Every sub-specialty deals with a certain field of dental health. Orthodontics is among these sub-specialties. This field deals with the teeth and jaw alignment. This is what Mississippi orthodontics is all about.

The doctors whose specialty is in the field of orthodontics are called orthodontists. Their work is to align the teeth and jaws that are not positioned in a proper way in the mouth. The teeth in the mouth should be well positioned in a way that makes cleaning much easier and efficient. If teeth are not well aligned, it makes it hard for them to be cleaned.

Improperly cleaned teeth are often at a higher risk of developing dental diseases, and are therefore susceptible to being lost early. Once diseases such as periodontal disease and tooth decay have set in, it is much harder to clean the mouth and chewing becomes a problem. Chewing with such teeth often places a lot of stress on various muscles in the neck and head area, which may cause headaches, back pain, neck aches, shoulder pain, and TMJ syndrome.

Teeth with improper alignment in the mouth may bring about a bad view. People who have crooked teeth are fond of hiding them when smiling or laughing because they lack confidence of showing them off. This can greatly affect the self-esteem of an individual and their lives.

Orthodontists use a wide range of removable and fixed appliances to correct misalignment in teeth and jaws. These appliances are used for a wide range of functions such as retraining muscles, moving teeth, and affecting the growth of the jaws. The mechanism in which these appliances work involves placing gentle pressure on the jaws and teeth that are affected until they are properly aligned.

There are various devices with diverse capacity to correct dental misalignment. The type of dental devices used by the medical practitioner is dependent on the degree of effect and suffering the condition has already caused. Sometimes to solve a certain condition, various devices and approache may be required. Each and every stage of the treatment has a different appliance and approach.

If one is interested in becoming an orthodontist, it is important to know that this is not a light decision. The education process alone can take over ten years to complete after one has graduated from high school. One must complete four years earning a bachelor degree in any medical field before proceeding to medical school for another four years to earn a second degree.

There is another three years that one has to spend in orthodontic residency. After completing residency, one has to pursue licensure. This consists of excelling in written examination that is administered by the American Board of Orthodontics. After getting the license, one may opt to go for board certification immediately or at a later time. The level of income is mostly determined by the experience one has in the field.
