Unknown Little Secrets Of Ginger Lilies

By Charles Jones

Plants are like newborn babies who need special care and attention. Some of them could be so frail but really beautiful that extra effort is also given to make sure that they will grow properly. Ginger lilies are one of these plants that is raised not only for its simple appearance, but for the astounding scent it produces.

As its name implies, it is really a cousin of the ever useful kitchen ingredient, the ginger plant. They have the same root like projections called rhizomes, and it grows much like it by running it roots under the soil. There are nodes on its side, and pick one that points out the most to make it the stem.

It looks like a little banana since the shape of its leaves looks like it, but what stands out are the orange to white flowers protruding on the side of the stem on some variety. Others have flowers that blooms on the topmost point of the bud, often showing hair like projections from the petals. They do not take up so much room as they just grow vertically all the year round.

Perhaps the most sought variety is the one whose flowers are shaped like a butterfly. Deceivingly frail as it may look like, they are not that difficult to cultivate actually. In fact, they can survive on acidic soil as long as there is constant moisture on it.

They grow best in partially shaded areas, but if none are available, an area with enough sunlight will do just fine. One thing to remember about the latter condition is that you need to transfer it to a shaded area in hot afternoons, as the heat will make the leaves curl up. If you place them in pots, make sure that they have enough space to spread out.

First classified as an invasive type of plant, they have long been accepted, propagated and kept as ornamentals in many parts of the world today. They like to grow in soils which are maybe too acidic for any plants to grow on and which requires a little cultivation plus fertilizer. Be patient about the flowers, since they will only come out after one year from its budding.

However frail they appear to be, these plants have properties which seem to make pests and other insects repugnant for them. In fact, it is reported that it has natural oils which act as repellants, so you would need not to worry about the latter. If animals do come nearer to them, it would only do so because of the sweet smelling scent it emits.

These plants are reputed to have natural oils which have insecticide properties, so these can be helpful to keep pest away from other plants. You may put some inside the house or at your garden table to repel those nasty mosquitoes. However, be prepared for cats, dogs and even some species of birds to come near the plants because they are attracted by the smell just like you do.

These are not difficult to propagate actually, though the requirements may sound too meticulous. It is just in the beginning stage that the process of planting them may be kind of strict. But when you have these plants full grown in your homes, the sweet smell alone will be so rewarding.
