By Sharron Cantu

Urgent care is defined as being treatment for patients who are suffering from injuries or conditions that may lead to more serious complications if not treated right away. New York urgent care is a great alternative to emergency rooms and your general practitioner in this sense. They are quite capable, and will take all types of patients.

If you've experienced a small accident such as falling off a skateboard and twisted your ankle, you may have to visit this category of walk-in clinic center. If the injury is extreme enough to the point where you can't even walk to touch it without feeling immense pain, you shouldn't just let it be. It may not be life-threatening, but if not properly cared for, your ankle may never be the same. Emergency room are expensive and your regular doctor might not have enough time to see you. This is when walk-in clinic centers are great to have available.

These clinics or centers are the perfect medium between an emergency room and a general physician. It's great for minor emergencies, and are available for way longer hours than your regular doctor's office. It's also quite easy to just walk in and get quick care if you need.

The Urgent Care Association of America requires that all of these category of walk-in clinic centers follow their rules and regulations. Specifically, they must fall under one of two categories. If the center is Category 1, a licensed doctor is present during the open hours. If the center is Category 2, either a licensed doctor or nurse practitioner is present. Either way, a licensed doctor has to be employed as the director of the facility.

Some category of walk-in clinic centers will specify certain hours where they will only take pediatric patients. Otherwise, they should accept patients of all ages. All centers are required to have patient restrooms, two exam rooms, and a waiting room. Additionally, they need to be open every day for at least four hours every day, leading up to three thousand hours a year. If the center isn't regulated as it is supposed to, this rule can be waived if it is within five miles of a proper one.

Other requirements these walk-in clinic centers need are X-rays, phlebotomy services, automated external defibrillators, stocked drug carts, oxygen, and working phones. All practitioners on site must be able to work this equipment perfectly. Additionally, they must be able to use IV medication and perform minor procedures such as cyst removals or applying splints to injured bones.

You could wait for you general practitioner to see you if you'd like, but depending on schedules and office hours, it could be a while before you're attended to. An alternative is to visit the emergency room, where you'd most likely be waiting for hours behind many patients. You can easily avoid all this by going to a walk-in clinic center.

Getting affordable care at an urgent care center is as easy as just walking in. No appointments are necessary, and you will be seen very quickly, basically within thirty minutes. Additionally, you will probably be seen by a dedicated doctor since you aren't in a frantic emergency room.
